About the CEFR and This Profiler
The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) is an international standard for describing language ability. It uses a six-point scale, from A1 for beginners, up to C2 for those who have mastered a language. This profiler focuses on the first two levels:
- A1 (Beginner): Basic phrases and interactions. The words highlighted in yellow fall into this category (roughly the top 1,000 most frequent words).
- A2 (Elementary): Simple sentences on familiar topics. The words highlighted in blue represent this level (roughly the 1,000-2,000 most frequent words).
How to Use This Tool
For EFL Teachers:
- Assess Text Difficulty: Quickly paste a text to see if its vocabulary is suitable for your A1 or A2 students. A text with many un-highlighted words is likely too difficult.
- Adapt Materials: Identify complex words (un-highlighted) and replace them with simpler synonyms to make authentic materials more accessible.
- Create Vocabulary Lists: Use the un-highlighted words as a basis for a pre-teaching vocabulary list for a specific text.
For EFL Students:
- Choose Reading Material: Paste a news article or story to see if you can understand most of the words. If you see a lot of yellow and blue, it's probably a good level for you!
- Identify New Words: The words that are not highlighted are great candidates for your vocabulary notebook. They are less common and are important for expanding your word knowledge.
